How the Society Works:

The Great American Novel Invitational Society (GR.A.N.I'S.) offers for sale contemporary works of poetry, art, and fiction and selected works of the classic masters in electronic format. Works are offered for sale -- and ordered from -- the Society's Web Site and its monthly "e-Zine."

How To Submit a Work for Possible Publication:

Membership in the Society is required in order to submit a work for consideration for publication. Membership in the Society is currently $12.95 per year, and compares most favorably with the "readers' fees" now charged by many publishers and agents. (These fees often start at several hundred dollars.)

Membership entitles each member to submit for consideration (for possible publication) one book-length manuscript (or "ms.") per quarter. We doubt that this will inconvenience any any serious author. Even those "authors" who turn out multiple romance or adventure books each year only manage to do so with armies of assistants and ghost writers.

Members will receive the Society's e-Zine approximately every month, by e-mail. The e-Zine will announce new works of fiction, art, and poetry. It will also contain the entire first chapter of a few selected works. Authors and Society members may forward the e-Zine to interested parties (friends, relatives, and colleagues who have expressly requested such notification) to generate interest in their works and those of other Society members. Note that the Society does not support "spam" (sending unsolicited e-mail). Any member abusing this policy will be suspended from the Society and their works will be removed from the publication list.

Other than Society membership, there is no charge to the author for e-publication by the Society. (For more on e-publication, see The Rationale Behind Electronic Publishing.) Authors will receive royalties from the sale of their works through the Society.

What the Society Publishes:What We Publish

The GR.A.N.I. Society publishes works of fiction (full-length novels and collected works), poetry, and original art or photography. The author avows that all submitted works are original efforts to which s/he owns the copyright and will defend the Society against competing claims to such copyright.

The GR.A.N.I. Society publishes works that meet our standards primarily as e-Books (books designed to be read on electronic media -- which, at this time, means on a computer). e-Books may be distributed as electronic files ... or on CD or DVD. For those who prefer reading matter that they can hold in the hand, the purchaser may request a paperback edition (to be picked up by that purchaser at a leading book store in his or her locale).

How the Society Works:

Other than Society membership, there is no charge to the author for e-publication by the Society. However, the Society is committed to publishing works of recognizable value, and submission does not guarantee publication.

Please also recognize that our editors have certain preferences that may influence the genres, themes, and approaches that are accepted for publication. For example, we will not publish any work that denigrates or promotes hatred toward a particular class or ethnic group. We will not publish a work predicated on sloppy or incomplete scholarship. And, while we are not prurient, we do not plan to publish works whose primary purpose (or effect) is to sexually stimulate the reader. In these matters, the decisions of our editors is final.

Almost There? Need Help? Need Editing Help?

On the other hand, you may submit a work that we would like to publish but which we feel is not, as submitted, "quite ready for prime time." In such instances, we may suggest that you contract with an outside editorial professional for assistance in bringing your work up to standards. Such editing might include grammatical editing, developmental editing (work on developing your themes or even your story line) or simply some final polishing. If you do not have access to an editorial professional with whom you are comfortable working, you may ask us to quote you rates for these services. While"writers' (editorial) services" are not our primary function, we recognize that such editing is often necessary and that offering it brings value to Society members.
